Airborne Wind Europe is the network of leading European airborne wind energy companies. It recently published an analysis of available wind resources over Western Europe and hence also Norway. They compare the energy available at an altitude of 100 m to 500 m, which represents the available energy for wind turbines and kite turbines respectively.
The analysis concludes that most Western European places have mean wind speeds that are 1-2 m/s higher at 500m than at 100m. This increase in available wind speeds translates into a higher amount of available wind power. The analysis thus supports the assumption that airborne wind energy systems will reach higher capacity factors and produce cheaper electricity compared to traditional wind turbines.
